A Tasting at Mattaponi

The name Mattaponi comes from the combination of names of the four rivers in Spatsylvania County, Virginia (Mat, Ta, Po, and Ni) and was also the name of the Indian tribe ruled by Chief Powhatan.  Mattaponi is a world class leader in their fruit wines, which include Tibik-Kisimin (blueberry wine, which is also called "moonberry"), Odeimin (strawberry wine), and the delectful Pow Wow (chocolate covered strawberry wine).  There is a blackberry wine, as well; but they were sold out of this highly desired wine, during my tasting.
Mattaponi also has a selection of white and red wines, none being claimed as Reserve.  Their selection includes Chardonnay, Riesling, Wabamin (which is 100% Niagra), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabs Sauv and Franc, Chamboursin, and Miskwamin.  They call the Miskwamin adult grape juice, which is exactly what it tastes like.  Mattaponi has 56 acres on site, as well as, other land in production around the area.  They have been crafting their wines for 20years and selling for 7.  Their estate wine is the Wabamin.  All other wines, except for the Riesling are made from Virginia grapes.
